2-Track Ash Pit - HO Scale

A classic 2-track ash pit based on a Reading Railroad prototype.
Manufacturer: RR Craftsman
SKU: LS-APL2S
$22.49

Designed from original Reading Railroad blueprints, this 2-track ash pit was found in steam engine service facilities. This model has been selectively compressed from the prototype in length by approximately 12 feet (about 1.4").

Ashes are manually shoveled/raked into the center area where they can be removed by conveyor or a crane with a clamshell bucket. The prototype had 2 dual-track ash pits with a 5th track centered between them and an overhead crane that moved the cinders to hoppers or gondolas in the center track. This is a typical design appropriate for any mid to large size steam engine facility. The Walthers overhead crane would be an appropriate model to include. We have a (non-working) clamshell kit that can be used with the crane to complete the scene.

This is a "speed kit" that consists of the walls and abutments as a single part and the floor with 108 rail posts already secured and aligned as a second part. The floor is a "concrete white" while the posts are gray. A painting mask is included that allows painting the floor, applying the mask, then painting the posts (if desired). This assembly method allows easy painting and detailing prior to final assembly.

Additional parts include:

  • Optional stairs for each end of the pit;
  • Three lengths of .060 brass wire;
  • 2 globe valves, cored for .060 wire, printed in gray;
  • 8 pipe unions, cored for .060 wire, printed in gray;
  • 4 pipe tees, cored for .060 wire, printed in gray;
  • 6 pipe elbows, cored for .060 wire, printed in gray;
  • 4 pipe spray heads, cored for .060 wire, printed in gray;
  • 16 pipe stands, sized for .060 wire, printed in concrete and gray.
